Breaking up a long-term relationship (6+ years): how to behave with someone who suddenly shut down?

Hello! I’d like to get an expert’s perspective on my situation and understand how to act moving forward.

I was in a long-term relationship (over 6 years), much of which took place long-distance due to external circumstances. We saw each other regularly, traveled together, and planned a shared future in another country. My then-partner helped me with paperwork, and we planned to get married once we resolved work and relocation issues.

He always seemed to me like a very calm, loving, and reliable person. Minor conflicts were rare and only arose from differences in life perspectives (I’m more career-driven and plan-oriented, while he’s more relaxed).

However, after my last three-week trip to see him, just days after I returned home, he suddenly initiated a breakup.

The reasons were vague: that the "atmosphere" with me wasn’t right (I can be too sad or take things too personally), that relationships weren’t for him, and that he was tired of waiting for changes. He also admitted he had been considering the breakup for about a month but kept postponing the conversation.

During the breakup itself, he was deliberately calm. But when I tried to ask for details, he became irritated, shut down, said I was ruining his mood, that the conversation was pointless, and later claimed that "feelings had faded" and he wanted to live alone. After that, he removed me from his friends lists on social media and gaming platforms (but didn’t block me).

I don’t dismiss his complaints—I recognize my flaws and am already working on myself (including seeing a psychiatrist for medication to stabilize my emotional state). I never refused to change, but I feel like I wasn’t even given time or a chance.

We haven’t spoken in a month. I feel immense pain because I lost a potentially life-defining relationship built on deep trust and security. Socializing (especially with men) is difficult for me, so this connection was unique for me.

Why was I loved all this time, only for everything to end so abruptly? Does this align with what he’s saying? Why didn’t he want to talk about it with me? I still don’t understand, I’m confused, and it’s killing me.

So I’d like to hear from those who may have seen similar situations: Is there a chance in the future to restore at least a calm, neutral dialogue? +

What behavior from my side now would be the least destructive (complete silence or limited contact only on practical/documentary matters) to avoid pushing him away for good?
