I've been diagnosed with cancer: how to snap out of the numbness and pull myself together to fight?

After surgery to remove an ovarian tumor, the histology results showed the tumor was malignant and of a rare type. I’ve been in a kind of stupor, fear has paralyzed me. On top of that, I can’t get the samples quickly, I can’t see a doctor quickly (I have to travel to other cities that are often under shelling), it’s all like being in a fog. I need to act, but this inner "stupor" and all the technical obstacles seem to have paralyzed me. Friends say I have to fight and think positively, but how do I think positively and pull myself together?

Psychologists’ answers

Good afternoon,

This is certainly a serious and emotionally challenging situation.
It’s unlikely you’ll be able to pull yourself together right away—or if you do, it will only be temporary—because you need to emotionally process this situation first. Talk about it with those you feel comfortable with, and it would be good to find a professional to work with, perhaps through projects where this is affordable.

You won’t be able to think positively right away; first, you’ll feel bad, horrified, and desperate, and only gradually will you be able to accept the situation and find support, hope, and even new meaning.

Also, look for groups or people who have been through a similar situation. You’re strong.

Cancer found: how to snap out of the numbness, pull yourself together, and fight?

I’m sorry this happened to your health. I truly sympathize with you and want to offer my support. A diagnosis is not a life sentence, especially since you’ve already undergone surgery.

A kind of numbness has set in, and fear has paralyzed me.

I believe you should view your current state—fear and numbness—as a NATURAL and at the same time TEMPORARY reaction to intense stress(!) I’m confident you will gradually regain control, and that emotional stupor caused by fear will fade away.

Indeed, how to act? Where to find the strength?

Perhaps in the meanings that lie before you? For what is worth living and overcoming this illness? I don’t know many details about your life—your family, children, plans, or dreams you had before the illness. Yet I’m certain it’s worth not giving up for your own sake(!) That is the main and key point. You are the highest value to yourself in this world. So it’s best to focus on that. And not only that… Also on what may lie ahead for you and with you. So that you can fulfill yourself and unfold in every possible sense.

So, you’ll have to accept the CHALLENGE and act DESPITE the circumstances. Start by focusing on everyday things—on what is within your power. On caring for your body, household tasks, and everything that makes up your daily routine.

This approach reconnects you with reality, pulling you out of numbness.

It’s essential to seek help and support. Are there people around you who can provide this? Who, in particular, could assist you with trips to the doctor?

All of this together will be the way to

But how to think about it better

Remember your strength, which you’ve shown before. Your victories and virtues, everything worth valuing…

Thank you. I had dreams of my own house in a small town and a garden with flowers. I don’t have children. The surgery I had was only the first and not radical, so there’s still a radical procedure ahead, as well as chemotherapy and everything else. My elderly mother supports me, but she no longer has the strength or energy to push me forward. I feel guilty toward her because of this situation. Thank you for your support. I will try to find the strength based on your advice.

Actually, I shouldn’t be answering you right now, because I shouldn’t even be alive. That’s what the doctors told my mother when I was just three weeks old. "Medicine is helpless; we’ve done everything we could—only a few days remain," and so on. But no matter what the doctors said, here I am. And there have been several such moments in my life. Doctors would say one thing, and something entirely different would happen. Doctors are people too, and they can make mistakes.

So don’t rush to draw conclusions. First and foremost, you need more than one examination before you and the doctors can be even somewhat certain. Don’t rush into treatment without a confirmed diagnosis!

Treating an oncological condition is an individual matter and sometimes requires a medical conference. It’s very important to get multiple opinions from different specialists. Finding an experienced doctor you can trust with the most precious thing—your life—is not easy.

Allow yourself to experience the shock. Don’t suppress your emotions. Let yourself cry, be angry, scream, or stay silent—this is a normal reaction to severe stress. Don’t blame yourself for what happened. Any emotions you feel are normal, and you shouldn’t try to suppress them, wasting the energy you need for recovery. So you can talk to a psychologist without holding back, without trying to be someone else—just be yourself.
